            HOME AND AWAY

            SURF CLUB (BAR) - NIGHT

            MARTHA, KIM

MARTHA and KIM are chatting as they close up the bar
together. Both are attracted to the other - But neither of
their feelings are out there yet.

At present, the conversation is general, as Martha fills Kim
in about growing up on the farm.

                                MARTHA
Laugh all you want - I'm telling you, you
don't know hard work until you've
shovelled cow dung at five thirty in the
                      morning!

                                KIM
                          (amused)
                      And you seriously enjoyed that?!

                                MARTHA
You betcha. Morning's the best time of
day! The sun's rising, the air's crisp -

                                KIM
The air's stinky if you're shoveling cow
                      crap!

                                MARTHA
                          (laughing)
Trust me - you get used to it.

KIM'S reaction shows he's still amused - but not convinced.

                                MARTHA (CONT'D)
You're such a city boy, you know that?!

                                KIM
                      And that's a bad thing?

                                MARTHA
It's not a good thing. Everyone in the
city's out for themselves - people are up
                      themselves, rude - no-one gives a stuff
                      about anyone else...

                                KIM
Says the girl who's just spent the last
                      six months in New York!

                                MARTHA
That was different - I was getting to
know Mum. No way could I live there full
                      time...

Speaking of where Martha's going to live, Kim feels the door
open to ask the question he's been wanting to ask.

                                KIM
So...where are you going to live? I mean,
                      now that you've found Alf...?

                                MARTHA
I guess I'll head back to the farm.

KIM'S disappointed. The truth is he likes MARTHA and wants
her to stay - but he's just come out of another relationship
and doesn't want to rush into anything else so therefore
            hasn't said anything.

But MARTHA, being the cluey chick that she is, suspects this -
and is playing with him. She continues to string him along.

                                MARTHA (CONT'D)
Grandad and I'll still keep in touch -
                      and I'll visit...but it's not like I've
got much to hang around for full time, is
                      there?

She's kept the casual, throw-away tone - but she smiles when
            KIM resisters what she's saying.

                                KIM
                      You mean...?

And now MARTHA'S totally down the line with him.

                                MARTHA
You think I've spent the last four hours
chewing your ear off for no reason?

                                KIM
                      Right...Well...

                                MARTHA
Look, I know you've just come out of a
big, long-term thing and it's still
really fresh, but you know what - you've
gotta get on with life sooner or later -
so why not make it sooner?

KIM'S taken aback by her forthright approach - but he likes
            it.

                                MARTHA (CONT'D)
And hey, if worse comes to worse, I don't
have a problem with being your rebound
                      chick...

They share a smile now - KIM likes this girl!

                                MARTHA (CONT'D)
So what do you reckon? You gonna ask me
                      out or what?

                                KIM
                          (smiling)
                      Dinner at Stephan's sound okay?

                                MARTHA
That posh joint in Yabbie Creek?

            KIM nods.

                                MARTHA (CONT'D)
Make it beer and pizza down in the
                      beach...

She starts for the door, leaving KIM smiling - but she turns
            back to offer:

                                MARTHA (CONT'D)
I'll see you at seven...City boy...

MARTHA'S pleased with herself - she's just managed to hook
            herself the man!
ENDS.
